Enise Carr American
Enise Carr (b. New Orleans, LA) has produced contemporary abstract paintings, prints, and sculptures for over two decades, exploring the themes of nature, memory, and history. Within his praxis, Carr uses the act of layering to interpose his personal experiences and challenge the implied contexts placed on abstract artists within the African diaspora. He begins his process by simplifying both the imposed visual characteristics and social contexts to produce a work that exists in conversation with past perception and present understanding, allowing for the formation of new connections. The architectural structure prompts viewers to inspect their prejudices and predispositions as they, similarly to Carr, gradually dissect the layers of visual information. While physically the works exist within established dimensions, his works challenge their own edges as they break the continuous lines existing within borders. Carr embraces the cumulative quality of his work, embodying an ecosystem of gestures that amass as a representative of his introspective methodology.
